OnePlus 3 scraps invite purchasing scheme, launches 14 June
OnePlus, the Chinese company teaching consumers the basics of numerical progression, has announced that its next flagship phone will debut on 14 June.
Aptly called the OnePlus 3, the device will sport some spiffy top-end hardware, but the chief change is beyond its skin. This time around consumers can purchase the phone without an invite.
“We’re releasing the OnePlus 3 invite-free, right from launch day. In addition, invites are gone forever from future OnePlus product launches,” revealed the company on its blog.
That’s major. In fact, it now suggests that OnePlus feels that its big enough to stand on its own two feet, without the need for the hype that the invite-only system generated.
“When we first started out, our team was incredibly small. We had no idea what the demand of the OnePlus One would look like. We also weren’t fans of flash sales, where there’s a risk of everything selling out immediately, forcing fans to wait indefinitely,” explained the company.
“We’re proud to have reached a point where we feel confident in making our new device available without invites from day one.”
Some things however don’t change. OnePlus will again be launching the OnePlus 3 using virtual reality, as it launched its predecessor.
The phone, as rumour has it, will sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 brain, 6GB of RAM and a 5.5-inch screen. And based on leaked images, it’ll look a lot like HTCs and Huaweis of recent years.
Stay tuned to Gearburn for coverage of the phone both pre- and post-launch.
