PS4 media player update brings 360 photo/video support

PS4 360 media player

Preordered a PlayStation VR headset but worried about content? Well, Sony isn’t standing still either, issuing a very relevant update for its PS4 Media Player application.

The 2.50 update delivers 360 video and 360 photo support to Sony’s home console, although you’ll need to bring your own photos and videos to the table. This approach differs to Oculus and the Samsung Gear VR, which offers a large library of 360 videos and photos in addition to support for your own content.

Nevertheless, this means that users can view their own captured 360 content on the PS4, a boon for those with 360 cameras.

The 2.50 Media Player update means that your 360 content can be put to use on the PS4

“If you’ve a PlayStation VR connected to your PlayStation 4, simply activate ‘VR mode’ from Media Player’s Options menu, then select your 360° video or photo from your media server or USB device. You’ll now be able to view your chosen media in full 360° thanks to the power of PlayStation VR,” Sony wrote on its blog.

Supported photo formats are JPEG, PNG and BMP, while supported video formats are MKV, AVI, MP4, MPEG 2 and AVCHD.

Sony adds that any supported content “must be captured in equirectangular format by a 360-degree omnidirectional camera“.

It’s not the only new feature in this update, as support for the lossless FLAC format has been introduced as well.
