VW will build its crazy-ass 400bhp Golf

Golf R400

This is awesome and just a little bit terrifying. Volkswagen is set to put the 400 horsepower Golf concept it debuted at the Beijing Auto Show into production. Yep, that’s right, with the right amount of cash, you could soon be tearing up the road in 400bhp Golf. I’ll say that one more time just so you grasp it: a 400bhp Golf.

In a conversation with Car and Driver, VW research and development chief Heinz-Jakob Neusser confirmed that the bonkers hatchback would indeed go into production.

While the news is exciting, it’s hardly surprising. When VW debuted the R 400, Jalopnik noticed that it looked a lot more production-ready than your average concept car.

With so many horses being extracted from its 2.0l engine, the Golf R 400 should be able to get to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds before hitting a top speed somewhere around the 280km/h mark, although that may well be limited in some markets.

Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to go camp outside VW’s media offices until we’re allowed to drive one.
