Is Mercedes planning an AMG GT-inspired Audi TT rival?

If rumours are to be believed, Mercedes is planning to enter the swanky hairdryers’ car market, competing against the likes of Audi’s TT.

Autocar suggests that the company, inspired by its recent AMG GT, will boast a 2+2 seating configuration and a “practical liftback” roof. Sounds brilliant, doesn’t it?

Allegedly, Stuttgart’s stylists will reach into the AMG GT’s styling cabinet, pulling out some sleek and racy body panels. There are also rumours of power figures tipping 400 bhp, which should keep occupants (and their hairstyles) very happy.

What’s even more interesting is this vehicle’s proposed placement in Mercedes’ current pecking order.

“As well as a coupé variant,” states Autocar, “Mercedes-Benz is also mulling over a roadster version. This has led to suggestions that it may eventually replace the SLK, although this has been denied by company officials.”

The SLK, mind, has been one of the company’s more successful models, and subsequently started the hard top convertible revolution.

While the vehicle is poised for a 2019 release, gunning for the Audi TT makes sense from a commercial standpoint, filling a gap that’s fairly large in Mercedes’ current vehicle lineup.
