It’s official: GP2 Series is now Formula 2

GP2 is usually the final stepping stone for drivers hoping to get to Formula 1, being a support series for the top-flight of motorsport as well. That connection has waned a little in recent years, as drivers from Formula 3, Formula Renault 3.5 and other categories find their way to F1.

Now, after weeks of rumours, the FIA has announced that the GP2 Series will be renamed Formula 2, with a view to position it more closely to Formula 1.

“Completing this process with Formula One Group and bringing FIA Formula 2 to life is a very important step. The championship will provide the final level for junior drivers who are looking to reach the ultimate goal of Formula One, and we have achieved a key target for the FIA in completing our single-seater pyramid,” said FIA president Jean Todt in a statement on the FIA website.

The GP2 Series will now be known as Formula 2, as part of a greater effort to boost its connections to F1

Todt pointed out some of the past efforts to establish an “ecosystem” for motorsport.

“In recent years we have developed a hugely successful programme of FIA Formula 4 championships in 12 countries around the world, the FIA F3 European Championship has become very strong and competitive, and now we have this final piece of the puzzle. I am also very pleased to see that we are already working in the same direction as Formula One Group, and I am sure that this positive relationship will continue to benefit our sport.”

The FIA Formula 2 championship will feature ten rounds, with all but one race (at Jerez) being in support of F1.
