11 years on: Twitter remembers 9/11
People in America and around the world will spend today remembering where they were today 11 years ago. Memorials have gone up across social networks, with some people remembering individuals, others the 2 997 people killed in the attacks.
For many however, Twitter was the focal point. “Remember911” and “11 de Setembro” bot trended globally on the social network.
Most of the tweets were sincere in their remembrance of the event:
It’s been 11 years, but we’re pretty sure everyone remembers where they were on this day in 2001. For all the lives lost <3 #Remember911

I fear that the wounds we suffered eleven years ago at the hands of terrorist will heal, the self inflicted wounds will not. #Remember911

Today is a day to remember, to honor, to thank those who protect us, and to be proud because in God we trust. #remember911

While most were sincere in the memorial Anonymous chose a more conspiratorial route:

#Remember911 – One of the biggest terrorist attacks in history made by terrorist organisation which still exists.. | tmblr.co/Z_WFywTBd1b_

Others meanwhile chose to remember people killed in the wars that followed the attacks on America:
Cousin Jeremy. KIA: Afghanistan 2010. You are not forgotten. Neither are those who have died & those who are still fighting. #Remember911

Those serving in Afghanistan had their own tribute:

Even usually humorous parody accounts were somber for the occasion:
May the force be with the 9/11 victims and their families. #Remember911
