BurnCast: #BringBackOurGirls takes social media by storm but will it effect change?
Welcome to BurnCast, our weekly podcast that discusses tech trends, innovation and news. Hosted by Mich Atagana and Stuart Thomas.
Three weeks ago more than 200 girls were taken from a school in Northern Nigerian. The story received very little international media until a social media movement began with the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls. Nigerian citizens are also using social media to air their unhappiness at the government’s efforts to secure a safe return for the hostages.
On this episode of BurnCast we chat about the hashtag and what it means as a social media campaign. What makes it different from similar campaigns such as Kony 2012? The hashtag has trended in various parts of Africa and has gained international attention.
