After all the drama around Windows 8, Microsoft very clearly needs Windows 10 to work. It looks like it’s got some pretty strong support in that regard too. The Redmond-based giant says that some one-million people have downloaded the technical preview of the refreshed OS and are providing plenty of information around potential bugs.

In an official blog post marking the announcement, Microsoft says that over “200 000 pieces of user-initiated feedback have been submitted to us via the Windows Feedback app from Windows Insiders”.

Among the top requests being made by the folks testing out Windows 10 are for tabs to be added to Explorer, options to remove the new search and task view buttons, and an animation or transition for the Start menu.

Oh and it also seems that the vast majority of those testers are making Windows 10 a part of their every day computing experience too. According to Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore, only 36% of installations of the Windows 10 Technical Preview are in VMs. The remaining 64% are all on actual PCs.

“This makes us confident that a lot of the feedback is based on “medium-term” use and not just a few minutes of experimentation,” he says.

Additionally, he points out, 68% of users are launching more than seven apps/day, about 25% are launching more than 26 apps per day, and five percent are launching 68 apps a day.

While Microsoft hasn’t given an exact date for its next technical preview build, Belfiore says one should be “coming soon”. The next version will also likely include some features based on user feedback.

“Even though we’re just two weeks into this huge collaborative project, we’re learning a lot and we’re working hard to keep up with your enthusiasm and passion,” says Belfiore.
