On 7 January, three armed attackers stormed the offices of French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo. Speaking perfect French and using military-style tactics they left 12 people dead, including cartoonists, journalists, two police officers and the paper’s editor.
The attack is believed to have been in response to the paper’s decision to print cartoons of the prophet Mohammed. In response to the massacre, people around the globe have taken to the streets and social media to express solidarity with the deceased.
The hashtag #JeSuisCharlie (I am Charlie) has been prevalent across a number of platforms. Given that so many of the dead were cartoonists and that blame for the incident was laid on a cartoon, it makes sense that a large portion of the tributes were visual.
