Multi award-winning online publisher Memeburn is seeking a talented and driven editor for all of its properties, including Ventureburn, Gearburn, and Motorburn. We’re looking for someone dynamic and dedicated; someone who is keen to become a key part of our fast-growing start-up company in Cape Town on a full-time basis.
You must be passionate about online media and all things digital. You need to be a geek as well as a journalist. Technology, digital media and innovation subjects must be your passion and obsession. In addition, you need to have a keen interest in the tech startup ecosystem in South Africa and Africa as a whole. You need to eat, drink and live the stuff.
You need to have experience in leading an editorial team, building an online brand (content, voice, social media strategy, developing online communities) and a good understanding of the commercial aspect of online content.
You need to be organised and driven, and you must be able to manage multiple projects.
Job detail
- Writing tech-savvy news & feature stories, including reviews, on emerging web and application technologies;
- Managing editorial and editorial staff
- Responsible for editorial quality and integrity
- Responsible for all content (both written and multimedia)
- Creating, implementing and adjusting content strategies, as well as contributing to brand and commercial strategy
- Identifying improvements, gaps and marketing opportunities
- Attending industry related events and networking
- Travelling to create, maintain and utilise networks
- Managing contributors and topics list
- Speaking at industry events and driving brand promotion
- Manage all syndication partnerships
- Report on and analyse traffic and social media growth
Requirements
- Journalism degree or similar qualification (experience may substitute the degree requirement)
- At least 5 years experience writing in the technology and digital media field, with extensive knowledge of the local and global environment
- At least 2-3 years experience leading an editorial team and/or growing an online brand
- Outstanding communication skills – written, verbal, presentation
- Have the ability to work to, as well as implement, tight deadlines
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Must be outgoing, tenacious and ambitious
- Drive, attitude & a sense of humour
- A love for tech news, trends, startups, entrepreneurship & digital media
- Must have a good grasp of online trends, best practice and general online publishing
- Be able to motivate, lead and mentor editorial team
- Must be extremely organised and comfortable with reporting
- Must be able to work under pressure, as well as maintain positive disposition to aid team morale in high pressure periods
- Be forward thinking and have initiative
- Excellent command of the English language
