Google is the king of search and it’s now bringing its skills to Google Drive. In a new update, Google Drive is getting faster search functionality, complete with New Language Processing (NLP) capabilities.
Announcing the update, Josh Smith, Product Manager at Google Drive, pointed out that the engineering of Google Search is coming to Google Drive.
“Innovation is critical for business success, so we’re constantly trying to build tools that enable our customers to do more,” Smith said.
The update is being rolled out today and will allow Google Drive users to make use of the new search feature and its NLP capabilities. The company explains that new NLP is a new fancy way of saying ‘search like you talk’. According to Google, the new search feature is much faster and easier to use.
In addition to natural language processing, Google Drive also has improved autocorrect functionality
What this means is that people do not have to use specific words when conducting a search. Phrases like “find my budget spreadsheet from last December” or “show me presentations from Anissa” will now suffice. Google Drive, Google says, is built to understand what the user is looking for.
The NLP will also solve spelling errors. There is no doubt that typos are a certainty in life, but search should understand what the user intended to say and now Google Drive does (in theory). The autocorrect feature will assist users when they spell words incorrectly and suggest corrections to the misspelled search term.
In addition to these updates, Google has introduced two new features to Google Docs. Users can now split their documents into multiples columns in Google Docs. The other new feature makes it possible for users to save a copy when they open, convert and edit non-Google files in Docs, Sheets and Slides.
