African telecoms company Internet Solutions has today announced it has concluded its purchase of MWEB.

Internet Solutions, owned by telecoms giant Dimension Data, initially announced an interest in purchasing the ISP in December 2016 but was granted approval by the SA Competition Commission earlier this month.

With the acquisition of MWEB, Internet Solutions now bolsters its presence in the consumer sector of South Africa, adding to its notable presence in business and wholesale spheres.

The acquisition presents IS with exciting opportunities for growth through MWEB’s established customer base, respected brand, and experience as a consumer-facing ISP,” the company adds in a press release.

For Internet Solution’s MD Saki Missaikos, this is among the more important takeaways from the acquisition.

“Consider that some consumers have faster fibre connections at home than many companies, and other consumers have no at-home connectivity but actively make use of mobile, free and premium public WiFi. Some are not content with a modest broadband connection, and some South Africans still have no access to the internet at all,” he notes.

“Both companies [Internet Solutions and MWEB] have a common vision of providing seamless connectivity for the African consumer at home, on the move, in the office, and in public spaces, and we look forward to welcoming MWEB employees to IS, and the broader Dimension Data family,” he concludes.

What does this mean for current MWEB customers?

“It’s business as usual until it gets even better,” Missaikos adds.

“We look forward to introducing new consumer products and experiences to the industry and public in the very near future.”

It’s been a big week for Internet Solutions too, with the company announcing plans to introduce a “network- and tech-agnostic” Internet of Things platform for South Africa.

“Internet Solutions’ IoT platform will offer intelligent, automated orchestration, and self-configuration by users so they can change network technologies (i.e. LoRaWAN, Sigfox, WiFi, GPRS and others) or the data interfaces and communication protocols at will,” the company elaborates.
