Google’s adorable Doodle celebrates the summer (and winter) solstice

Google’s doodlers really know how to capture a moment in an adorable GIF. And what might the latest moment be, you ask? The summer and winter solstice, of course.

Depending on which side of the equator you’re on, you’ll today experience the longest day of the year (north) or the longest night of the year (south).

“Today’s Doodle celebrates the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere,” Google explains.

“As the longest day of the year, solstice marks the official start of the summer season. If you live north of the equator, today you’ll enjoy the most amount of sunlight in a single day that you’ll have all year.”

That’s a different case entirely for southerners.

Cape Town is in for a smidgen over 11 hours of darkness tonight.

For those in Stockholm, Sweden, you enjoyed around 18 and a half hours of sunlight on 21 June.

“And the farther north, the more sun!” Google adds.

“In fact, in the Arctic Circle, the sun will shine for a full 24 hours.”

While Cape Town is nowhere near the Arctic Circle, it can look forward to slightly longer days beginning tomorrow.
