South Africa’s box office: SA ❤️ JL
Did you hear? South Africans and Justice League just spent their third weekend in a row together at the box office. It’s adorable.
I’m pretty sure they’re going to make it Facebook official, like, next week. I’ve already planned my comment: “Finally!!!” It’s a little cliché, but it lets people know that I knew before them, and that South Africa, Justice League and I are really close. And that’s all that matters.
I really think this relationship is going to last. I heard something about how this new kid — Star Wars or whatever — is moving here on the 15th and it may stir up some drama, but I gotta believe in love, you know?
Justice League is still #1 in South Africa’s heart, but Bad Moms Christmas is also kicking butt
Anyway, here are the other films that South Africans saw this weekend (1 – 3 December). They’re just friends, and way less important.
A Bad Moms Christmas crushed it, opening in second place, and pushing Daddy’s Home 2 into third. Nothing like familial discord right before the holiday season, am I right? According to Box Office Mojo, the second in the Bad Moms franchise has already pulled in over US$103-million worldwide from just a US$28-million production budget. Moms really can do anything.
Behind mom and pop are the adorable films at the kid’s table, currently populated by Mexican ghosts and a window-washing CGI bear. I’m only slightly jealous about it. Promise.
In fourth place is Disney’s Coco, also down one thanks to Bad Moms‘ rockstar entrance. The animation, which debuted last weekend, held strong against new kids’ film on the block Paddington 2, which opened in a respectable fifth place.
Local film She is King also cracked the charts this week
Another respectable debut: She is King, a local film about a woman from a rural village who moves to Joburg and is cast in a stage musical about Zulu Queen Mkabayi, opened in ninth spot this week — a feat that not many local films can claim.
Finally, the biggest drops of the week belong to none other than box office darling Thor: Ragnarok and the critically derided Geostorm.
Thor, enjoying its fourth week on the charts, dropped three spots from fourth to seventh. But Geostorm, in its seventh week, has dropped four spots from sixth to tenth. I guess it couldn’t weather the weekend. December is a Thor spot? I’m gonna put a Corg in it.
