You can now DM friends GIFs on Instagram

instagram gifs in direct messages

Instagram has introduced a feature everyone has wanted since the dawn of the company. No. It’s not chronological feeds. Instead the company now lets users send your friends GIFs via Direct Messages.

“From ‘LOL’ to ‘I love you,’ you can express yourself in countless visual ways when you’re messaging your friends,” the company wrote in an update.

Users stick of words and emoji can now insert moving images into their direct messages to friends. Tap the GIF button in the message composer bar to access the GIF library.

It’s not clear if it’s the same library you find on Stories — yes, that thin, boring library — but Instagram does mention that it’s powered by Giphy.

And if you hate making decisions in life, Instagram’s got you covered.

“You can also add an element of surprise by sending a random GIF. After you type in the search bar, simply tap “random” to send a random GIF associated with what you’ve searched,” it remarked.

The feature is currently live on current builds of the iOS and Android app.
