#NewlandsCrash: the death of three school girls leaves South Africa heartbroken

An early moring hit-and-run in Newlands East, Durban on Wednesday has rocked South Africa.

The incident reportedly involved a taxi, which jumped a red robot and clattered into four schoolgirls on their way to school. The driver then abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.

Three girls were killed. Another is fighting for her life.

On Twitter, #NewlandsCrash dominated morning conversation in South Africa, with journalists from the likes of News24, eNCA and The Mercury covering the event from the ground.

And some of the videos from the scene are absolutely heartbreaking.

South Africans are calling for justice, and questioned the taxi industry’s safety credentials.

While others couldn’t say much, and instead posted the broken heart emoji in response to the incident.

This is a developing story…
