Opera Mini browser adds offline file sharing using WiFi Direct

If you happen to use Opera Mini as your main smartphone browser, you can now also use it as a file transfer service.

The Norwegian company on Monday announced that you can now send and receive files between devices, without the need for an internet connection, using the browser.

Opera Mini uses a WiFi Direct connection between two devices which allows for a “200 times” faster connection than Bluetooth.

This also means that both users needn’t have an active internet connection, Bluetooth or NFC switched on.

To use the file sharing service, users can head into the Opera Mini menu, select File Sharing and choose “Send” or “Receive”. Users are then required to scan a QR code which allows the two devices to connect.

“Once a file is successfully transferred, the sender will be notified and the receiver will be able to access the file in the Received tab shown in Opera Mini,” the company added in a press release.

The feature is currently available in the latest version of the browser.
