Joburg-based comedy ‘Woke in Progress’ is Showmax’s next original series
After the success of Tali’s Wedding Diary and The Girl From St Agnes, Showmax on Tuesday revealed its next original series.
Titled Woke in Progress, the comedy series will follow “two broke, tryna-be-woke twenty-somethings” as they tackle life in Johannesburg.
“Having just found out she’s adopted, 22-year-old Martie has come to Joburg searching for her birth parents; 25-year-old Amandla is trying to reconnect with the motherland after decades,” Showmax explained in a press release.
Woke in Progress was written by Rea Moeti, who is also directing the show.
“When I first pitched Woke in Progress to Showmax, it was tamer than it is now, because I thought that was what South African platforms wanted. But Showmax has pushed it to go further,” Moeti said.
The director is well known for her award-winning short film Mma Moeketsi and her work on the series Lockdown.
Isidingo’s Zandile Lujabe and newcomer Laura Lee Mostert star in the series’ leading roles.
Additionally, Kiroshan Naidoo (Waterfront), Lebogang Tlokana (The River), Ebenhaezer Dibakwane (Thuli noThulani) and Yule Masiteng (Scandal!) also star in the comedy.
“They’re joined by a support cast of hoteps, Tinder-fodder, taxi-blessers, and tour guides,” Showmax said.
Woke in Progress will hit Showmax on 12 December 2019. Shooting for the series has already begun in Maboneng, Johannesburg.
