Google Chrome will now badge websites that are slow to load

Google on Monday announced that it will soon label slow loading web pages on Chrome with badges to help users navigate the browser more efficiently.

“Badging is intended to identify when sites are authored in a way that makes them slow generally, looking at historical load latencies,” the company said on its Chromium blog.

The badges will “take a number of forms” as Google tests a variety of options, including pop-up speed warnings on loading screens.

Additionally, the company also intends to warn users when their network or devices are affecting loading speeds too.

“Our long-term goal is to define badging for high-quality experiences, which may include signals beyond just speed,” Google explained.

According to the company, “speed badging” on Chrome is still in its experimental phase.

Earlier this year, however, the company updated Chrome on mobile for easier navigation between multiple tabs and is reportedly testing a browser-wide play-pause button as well.
