Last week in trailers: Black Panther & more Tom Cruise
Last week saw few new trailers released, and it’s probably for the best because what we got was hardly of a high standard. So if you’re looking to immerse yourself in the wonders of upcoming films, you can sit this one out.
But if you’re keen to revel in the terror that is the unending tide of Tom Cruise films, then welcome aboard. Let’s get started.
Black Panther
We’ll start with the good: The first trailer for Marvel’s first ever black superhero film is out, and it looks fun. What won’t be fun is sitting through any more of what is presumably that Afrikaans accent, but, hey, when a film stars Michael B Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Martin Freeman you can overlook such things.
Black Panther is out in South Africa 16 February 2018.
Coco
The official US trailer for Disney’s Coco was released last week, and it looks just as adorable as before (besides the constant comparisons to The Book of Life.)
“Desperate to prove his [musical] talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events,” the description reads.
Catch Coco in SA 24 November.
American Made
As someone who isn’t into action movies all that much, Tom Cruise has never appealed to me. But there’s nothing that appeals to me less than Tom Cruise playing an arrogant hustler who has little regard for the chaos he incites. Add to that a leading woman who is overtly sexualised and you can count me out immediately.
If any of that appeals to you, though, you can watch American Made in theatres 1 September.
Chasing Coral
Netflix’s Chasing Coral doesn’t look like a bad film, but it does serve to remind you of the unending damage humans have done to our planet, and that’s not always a fun way to spend a Friday night.
The documentary details the work of young scientists and filmmakers desperate to save coral reefs before they become extinct.
The film will be on Netflix 14 July.
You Get Me
You Get Me is an original Netflix psychological thriller about a teenage stalker and her twisted sexual fantasies. Because the world needed more of those.
The film stars Bella Thorne, Vine star Nash Grier and YouTuber Anna Akana, and will be streaming from 23 June.
Professor Marston & the Wonder Women
Professor Marston tells of the creation of Wonder Woman the character. The biopic looks at the life of inventor William Marston, his wife Elizabeth and their live-in domestic partner Olive Byrne. Read more about their interesting life here.
The film does not have a South African release date as yet, but will be available in the US on 27 October.
