Lego Canal Walk Launch

It’s been a while coming, but the Great Yellow Brick Company has officially launched its first certified Lego store in Cape Town.

Located at Canal Walk, a mall north of the city centre, the store is the third to be established in South Africa after its Sandton and Menlyn locations.

Great Yellow Brick was founded in 2017 by Robert Greenstein, Hayley Greenstein and Greg Bergh. Its goal is to launch a number of Lego certified stores across South Africa within the next three years.

The Cape Town store features a slew of sets for both young and old, including collections from Harry Potter, Star Wars, Netflix’s Stranger Things, the Ninjago series, and Lego’s own Creator line.

Some of these sets cost the same as a deposit on a small family car. Users can also purchase separate bricks and create their own works of art.

The store also features some nifty 21st century enhancements, including an AR display which allows you to build and visualise sets with the aide of computers, a mini rollercoaster, and a number of window displays.

One of these is particularly special to Cape Town.

Called “The Spirit of Bo-Kaap”, the build was created by a Lego fan and uses just less than 15 000 bricks to tell the story of one of Cape Town’s oldest suburbs. It took 150 hours to construct.

Enough blabbing though. Enjoy some sets and builds we spied at Thursday’s launch event at Canal Walk.
