Twitter is ‘very sorry’ for sharing your user data with advertisers
Your email address and phone number may have been used for targeted ads on Twitter.
The company on Tuesday revealed the privacy breach in a statement, where it noted that the information had “inadvertently” been used to target its Tailored Audiences and Partner Audiences advertising experiences.
“When an advertiser uploaded their marketing list, we may have matched people on Twitter to their list based on the email or phone number the Twitter account holder provided for safety and security purposes,” the company explained.
This means that an advertiser, such as an online clothing store, could have potentially matched your email address on Twitter to your information on their database to show you ads for their products.
“We’re very sorry this happened and are taking steps to make sure we don’t make a mistake like this again,” Twitter said.
Back in May, the company also discovered a bug that shared iOS users location data.
