MTN has the best mobile network in South Africa, latest speed tests reveal
MyBroadband Insights is back with its Q3 2019 mobile network quality report, shedding light on the best and worst networks in South Africa.
This quarter, the research team received more than 314 000 speed tests across South Africa, through MyBroadband’s speed test app.
The clear winner nationwide was MTN, with an average download speed of 35.31Mbps and a 14.05Mbps upload speed. It also had the lowest latency at 32ms.
Vodacom came in a close second with 31.19Mbps download, 11.35Mbps upload and 36ms latency.
Telkom featured strong download speeds at 22.42Mbps, but the slowest upload speeds at just 4.93Mbps.
Rain and Cell C fought for last position. Rain, however, had the lowest average download speeds of all the networks at just 16.71Mbps. Cell C featured the worst latency at 42ms.
In terms of city speeds, MTN came out on top in Cape Town, Durban and Tshwane. Vodacom and MTN were evenly matched in Johannesburg.
Rain, however scraped the floor in Johannesburg and Pretoria. Cell C in Durban and Cape Town.
“The research shows that South Africa had an average mobile download speed of 24.68 Mbps and an average upload speed of 9.03Mbps,” the report concluded.
