Rain 5G is now available to households in Gauteng, Cape Town in 2020
After switching on its 5G service for select users in September, Rain has announced that households can now also take advantage of Rain 5G.
The service promises speeds in excess of 700Mbps in a perfect world, but subscribers can probably expect around 200Mbps in day-to-day usage.
More importantly, the service is now competing directly with fibre packages, offering users unlimited data for R1000 per month.
The service will function similarly to current fixed 4G offerings, using a SIM card and a router for connectivity.
Rain is currently offering Huawei routers for R3450 once-off — that’s a fee you’ll have to pay on top of your first monthly instalment.
At present, the service is only available to those in Gauteng, namely Johannesburg and Tshwane’s metro areas, but Rain has promised 2020 will see a more widespread rollout.
“For now, rain 5G will only be available in certain areas in Johannesburg and Tshwane. During 2019 and 2020, coverage will expand to Cape Town, Durban and other major metros,” it noted in its marketing material.
This is pretty disappointing for Capetonians though.
Back in March, Rain told Memeburn that 5G would arrive in Johannesburg and Cape Town before any other metros in 2019.
