Corning develops anti-germ and glare glass displays
The same company that brought us Gorilla Glass, Corning, is now aiming to up the ante yet again. So apart from producing super strong glass, the company announced at this year’s MIT Technology Review Mobile Summit that its producing anti-reflective and anti-bacterial glass.
Just imagine actually being able to use your phone outside on a sunny summer’s day while knowing that your its most likely Ebola-free.
Although having glass covering your phone is great and all for protection of the device, what about your own health? For those of your who didn’t know, using your sleeve every now and then to clean your phone’s screen isn’t enough. Your phone is actually a disgusting germ carrier of sorts. Besides from being creepy and gross, it may actually be contributing to the spreading of diseases, bacteria and the likes.
Well, the brainy guys at Corning decided to focus their research on anti-bacterial glass technology. Jeffrey Evenson, the company vice president and chief of staff, said that the tech was initially aimed at the healthcare industry. After which he realized that there’s an actual commercial market for clean, disease-free phones.
“Corning is working to invent a cover glass that can kill both drug-resistant bacteria and drug-resistant viruses,” he was noted for saying. Corning’s special glass supposedly kills germs over time.
The fluorescent green dots appearing on the screens show us regular glass versus Corning’s super glass. You can see that in only 90 minutes the amount of E-coli bacteria is significantly less than the normal glass.
Also, apart from targeting the bacterial boogeyman, Corning is focusing on anti-reflective glass as well. In this picture below, the hole in the middle of the piece of glass is actually not a hole but rather the company’s special glass. Amazing! isn’t it?
“It’s going to make sunlight reading much, much easier,” says Corning. Yes! No we can finally use our smartphones outside of the house! Put its portability to good use.
So while we’ve reported LG and other tech giants slowly but surely start rolling out flexible glass and the likes, there are other interesting innovations in this arena as well. With more than 1.5 billion devices going on strong with their Gorilla Glass protection, these new innovations will surely rock our socks off in the near future.
