Apple planning bigger iPhones with metal chassis in 2014, says report

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is currently planning “an iPhone model with a screen larger than 4.5-inches measured diagonally,” as well as another model with a post 5-inch display. The anonymous sources also told the Wall Street Journal that Apple has finally decided to throw out the plastic chassis design for all its future iPhones.

These iPhone phablets are meant to directly measure up against competitors who have, for the most of last year, been releasing popular flagships with post 5-inch displays. Samsung is the main culprit, riding on the success of both its so-called phablets namely the 5-inch Galaxy S4 and the 5.7-inch Galaxy Note 3.

People familiar with the matter also told the Wall Street Journal that these upcoming versions will both have metal bodies similar to what the iPhone 5s has. Something we’ll not be seeing much of in the future, however, is polycarbonate casings. The reports say that Apple will be abandoning the iPhone 5c because of its “weaker-than-expected demand.”

Last year November, rumours surfaced that there is an iPhone with a curved display in the making. This device was meant to compete with Samsung’s Galaxy Curve and LG’s G Flex but is, according to these latest sources, discounted as mere rumours.

In July last year, the Wall Street Journal also reported that there was a 4.7-inch iPhone as well as 5.7-inch iPhone being tested. The same report also said that Apple’s planning on releasing a ridiculous 12.9-inch iPad. This doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.

The anonymous sources say that we can expect these iPhablets to be introduced in the second half of this year.
