EA’s ‘Dungeon Keeper’ for Android rating system flawed with favouritism
Dungeon Keeper for Android was launched recently, and while many diehard fans rejoiced at the old horny demon’s return, they soon realized that the game has been spoiled. Regardless of its controversial reception, if you look at the app rating on Google Play you’ll find it has more than 60,000 five-star and a rather low negative player response.
Destructoid sums up its review well:
“It’s a huge shame, because Dungeon Keeper is such a great franchise. I vividly remember getting hooked on the original for the very first time, and hooking in non-strategy fans with its unique perspective and visual style. But you’re getting none of that here, as you’re instead presented with a hollow freemium shell of what once was.”
In-game purchases of this free-to-play title flag you around every tunnel corner and simply doesn’t hold true to Bullfrog’s original titles. While many are upset about EA’s Dungeon Keeper Android by what they soon find to be a wallet-tugging annoyance, for some reason it has a 4.4 rating on Google Play.
As picked up by Pocketgamer, you’re given the option to rate the game after a certain period of play but instead of choosing the number of stars you think it deserves, you’re asked if you think it should receive “1-4 stars” or “5 stars”. Where the latter redirects you to Google Play’s official rating system, and the former redirects you to Customer Feedback. So sneaky, EA.
EA Games responded to Eurogamer with the following statement:
“We’re always looking at new ways to gather player feedback so that we can continue to improve our games. The ‘rate this app’ feature in the Google Play version of Dungeon Keeper was designed to help us collect valuable feedback from players who don’t feel the game is worth a top rating. We wanted to make it easier for more players to send us feedback directly from the game if they weren’t having the best experience. Players can always continue to leave any rating they want on the Google Play Store.”
Yeah, right.
