Super Mario Maker hits 1-million sales in US

December 2015 was a good month for Nintendo. Its Wii U console welcomed its fifth game to sell over a million copies in the United States — Super Mario Maker.

Thanks to data released by the NPD Group — a company that enjoys tracking these sorts of numbers — suggests that the game-design-slash-nostalgia-fueled-platformer was one of the company’s most popular Wii U titles to date.

While it might seem like a repackaged rehash of older Mario titles, Super Mario Maker does introduce gamers to game design mechanics previously unappreciated by said gamers. It allows them to design levels that adhere to their heart’s content and publish it on the Nintendo network for all to see and play.

We enjoyed the game when it was reviewed late last year, and it’s clear that it’s one of Nintendo’s more popular titles according to console users’ buying habits as well.

According to IGN, only five other titles have the distinction of selling over a million titles, including “Mario Kart 8Super Smash Bros. for Wii USuper Mario 3D WorldNew Super Mario Bros. U, and Splatoon.”
