AMD revisits the budget storage game with Radeon R3 SSDs

Companies are forced to diversify to stay relevant (and more importantly, alive), so it wasn’t much of a surprise to see AMD launch an SSD back in 2014. Come 2016, the company has now relooked its strategy, and feels it necessary to launch a new batch of drives to the lower end market.

The drives in question, dubbed the AMD Radeon R3 series, will feature drives from 120GB all the way up to 960GB monsters. It will also be manufactured by Taiwanese company Galt Inc.

According to OC3D, these drives won’t be the fastest things on the planet, but that’s to be expected. AMD’s marketing focuses mainly on those wanting sprightlier performance over traditional spinning drives. Still, transfer speeds of 520MB/s reads and 470MB/s writes isn’t exactly tardy either.

All four drives will be backed by a three-year warranty (pretty nice), and as luck would have it, they are already available in the US and Canada.

OC3D notes, taking prices from the US Amazon store, that the 120GB drive starts at US$40.99, the 240GB drive can be had for US$69.99 for the 240GB, and the current range-topper 480GB drive is US$136.99.

There’s no word on availability in South Africa just yet.
