Dragon Quest VII showcased at E3 2016, coming 16 September

The series that doesn’t always make it over to Western audiences is coming to Western audiences. During E3 2016, Square Enix finally showed off some English footage of Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past (DQ8) for the Nintendo 3DS.

A stand-alone game, DQ8 features characters who live in a world covered in islands. At some point during this planet’s history, it instead had continents, but all have since finished. Your quest is to travel to the past and figure out what went wrong.

Keeping in line with the original PlayStation release, DQ8 features a class system where characters can switch between specialities, such as warrior, mage, and thief. Those familiar with the Final Fantasy series (or Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation) will feel right a home by the looks of things.

The game will also feature completely overhauled graphics with a 3D engine with visible enemy encounters, backgrounds, and pretty much everything else. It looks gorgeous.

Dragon Quest VII is set to release in English territories on 16 September.
