Pay for some childhood nostalgia with the NES Classic Edition console

Break out those bell bottoms, dust off your backwards caps, because the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is coming back… kinda.

Nintendo of America has announced that a new, smaller NES will be hitting US retail shelves on 11 November. It’s going to cost you US$59.99 for that childhood nostalgia.

According to the press release, the device is called the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition — that’s quite a mouthful!

The little device will come pre-installed with 30 classic titles for the NES, but no cartridge slot. Sorry collectors, but this isn’t going to be a substitute for your normal or top-loader NES. And, no, it won’t be able to use the Disk Drive, either.

The NES Classic edition will include the likes of Super Mario Bros., Castlevania, and Final Fantasy. It’ll also (unfortunately) include Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.

It appears as though the system will be a straight emulator of the original console as games will have multiple suspend points, forgoing battery backup saves and password. It’s working is similar to ROMs in emulators.

The package will come with one Classic Controller with additional controllers fetching US$9.99. It will also be compatible with the Classic Controller Pro.

Nintendo doesn’t state if the hardware will filter the pixelated images to allow for crisper, more fluid visuals, or just output the video willy-nilly.
