Samsung CFG70 gaming monitor debuts with quantum dots
Samsung has today announced the global availability of its first gaming monitor with quantum dots, the CFG70.
The screen, which first debuted at Gamescom 2016, is available in 24-inch and 27-inch guises, and also boasts a curved face. Gamer-friendly features are also listed, including a 3000:1 contrast ratio, a 125% coverage of the sRGB colour spectrum and quantum dots.
“With the introduction of quantum dot technology to our pioneering curved monitors, Samsung offers a look into the future of gaming, along with a level of picture quality like the industry has never seen before,” notes Samsung’s SVP of Samsung’s visual display business Seog-gi Kim.
Quantum dots are tiny particles that can filter light into practically any given colour. This is determined and adjusted by the size of the dots in use. Along with HDR, quantum dots are currently the screen industry’s big buzzword.

Alongside the dots, the CFG70 also boasts a 144Hz refresh rate (thanks to AMD’s FreeSync) and a claimed 1ms response time to minimise motion blur.
While those features are particularly tasty, the screen is limited to 1920×1080.
Still, if you happen to have a projected US$399 (for the 24-incher) or US$499 (for the 27-incher) on hand, and not yet looking to game at 4K, it might be a worthy upgrade.
