Exclusive: AG Mobile confirms liquidation
South African smartphone brand AG Mobile has been liquidated, CEO Anthony Goodman has confirmed.
“AG has been liquidated,” Goodman told Gearburn via telephone.
The smartphone brand gained prominence after launching its Ghost smartphone (review) in 2015, touting a 24-hour swap-out service and a host of included accessories.
AG Mobile also launched the #Hashtag smartphone last year, as part of a collaboration with local hip-hop star Cassper Nyovest.
“It’s a solid mid-range phablet that’s quick, frugal and solidly built. It offers loads of personality and oodles of colour, but there’s still room for improvement namely in terms of camera performance, UI and build quality,” our Andy Walker said in his #Hashtag review.
AG Mobile’s Ghost smartphone was sold and heavily marketed by Cell C upon its release
The news comes after months of complaints on the AG Mobile Facebook page. Complaints ranged from non-responsive emails and calls to the 24-hour swap-out service not being available and the website being shut down.
“I am now going to get my lawyers involved with regards to legal action as my account is still being debited even though the 24 months are up and there are no means of contact AG Mobile,” read one Facebook user.
“I own an AG Ghost and was promised a 24 hour swap out if I ever get a cracked screen. I have been calling their customer service number including the one especially for AG Ghost and no reply for 2 weeks now,” read another complaint.
However, rumours of financial trouble have been doing the rounds for months now, as several users alleged that the firm was liquidated.
