Photo comparison: Galaxy S8 vs XZ Premium
The Samsung Galaxy S8 has built on the extremely solid foundation set by the S7, featuring the same camera sensor but with a renewed focus on image processing to get quality results. Meanwhile, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium has seen the Japanese firm adopt a cutting-edge 19MP camera sensor with super-fast memory for super slow motion clips.
So how do these phones stack up when it comes to photography? We’ve got a few samples for you to peruse…
We set the phones to automatic mode for these shots, generally holding the phones at the same distance and angle from the subjects. Expect minor differences in framing, due to the varying focal length and/or camera sensor positions.
Galaxy S8 Xz Premium
Galaxy S8 Sample
The Galaxy S8 produces a lovely shot here, although the lens flare of sorts is persistent in multiple shots.
Xz Premium Sample
The lack of lens flare means that the XZ Premium pretty much wins by default here.
Galaxy S8 Sample
Over-exposed? Either way, the Galaxy S8 veers toward the drab here.
Xz Premium Sample
The XZ Premium delivers some punchy colours and great detail thanks to the high-res camera.
Galaxy S8 Sample
The Galaxy S8 goes for the usual saturated colours again, but the kicker is the superior shadow detail.
Xz Premium Sample
The XZ Premium goes for the realistic, drab colour hue. But it loses out on detail in shadows on the right.
Galaxy S8 Sample
The Galaxy S8 delivers a darker shot, but you can actually read more of the ingredient list on the bottle.
Xz Premium Sample
The XZ Premium goes slightly brighter. But look at the jar and sauce bottle lids and you'll see they look blurrier compared to Samsung's.
Galaxy S8 Sample
The Samsung phone delivers sharp details, take a look at the golden syrup and bottom waffle for proof.
Xperia Xz Premium Sample
The XZ Premium delivers softer detail in general. Compare the chicken, bottom waffle and golden syrup to the Samsung version.
Galaxy S8 Sample
The Galaxy S8 seems to crank up the exposure in order to deliver a brighter foreground. But the sky is blown out as well.
Xperia Xz Premium Sample
The opposite seems to happen with Sony's phone. The foreground is extremely dark, but the sky is kept in check.
