‘Expect’ a gaming phone from Asus in the future

Mobile gaming is a giant portion of both Google and Apple’s app revenue, but smartphone makers haven’t really latched onto the idea of ‘gaming phones’ at all.

Sure, the Razer Phone launched late last year, but it’s one of few companies that have stretched the idea beyond marketing and into actual hardware.

But it may not be alone in this space for much longer.

And according to Asus’s global CEO Jerry Shen, consumers can “expect” a gaming phone from the company at some point in the future. And it might arrive with ROG branding too.

In an interview with Philippine publication Astig, Shen hinted that a gaming phone from the Taiwanese gaming hardware giant is in the works.

Vague? Yes. But coming from Shen’s mouth it’s a notable revelation, especially after those MWC 2018 rumours.

For one, it seems that mobile gaming may be the next smartphone trend, once everyone’s done with shoving as many cameras as they can onto their devices.

And, more importantly, consumer interest is there too.

With battle royale games currently experiencing an exponential rise — notably PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite: Battle Royale both coming to mobile — the scene is set for manufacturers to take advantage of the hype.

Using the Republic Of Gamers branding wouldn’t be a daft marketing decision either. But will an ROG-branded gaming phone simply be a marketing peacock with lame-duck hardware?

Only time will tell. And judging by Shen’s vague answer, we could be waiting a little while longer yet.
