The ZTE Axon 9 Pro is the company’s flagship comeback kid

The Axon 9 Pro is ZTE’s latest flagship. Yes, that ZTE. The same company that was clinging to life just a few weeks ago following US sanctions.

But now, with those sanctions lifted, the Chinese firm’s first device since is saying all the right things.

On the surface, it has all of 2018’s common flagship traits: a large, 18:9 screen; a dual camera setup at the rear; and a notch.

Beneath the 6.21 inch 2248×1080 AMOLED screen, there’s a Snapdragon 845 chipset, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage. You’re also getting a 4000mAh battery, a water and dust resistance rating of IP68, and a USB-C port.

The dual camera consists of a 12MP f/1.75 camera with OIS, and a 20MP wide-angle snapper. Up front, there’s a 20MP f/2.0 snapper.

Sounds good, doesn’t it?

But it’s real novel feature is Axon Vision, which fills in frames in low quality video to smooth out stutters. This goes nicely with HDR10 support, and an RGB sensor above the screen which adjusts screen contrast and colours as the device’s lighting surroundings change.

Beyond this, you won’t get a headphone jack, and the phone isn’t launching with Android 9.0 Pie.

Still, those specs are respectable. And as for the price? You’re looking at €649.

It’s not clear if the phone will launch in the US, or South Africa. But at least the Germans can look forward to it in the near future.
