Chinese brand UMIDIGI is offering an $80 iPhone 7 clone
We’ve all heard about Chinese clones of popular smartphones, with some clones even launching before their inspiration. Now, nascent brand UMIDIGI (formerly UMI) has taken to actually marketing their UMIDIGI G handset as an “$80 iPhone 7” clone.
In fact, the manufacturer has gone so far as to compare its Android Nougat handset to the iPhone 7 in press photos and a promotional video. Talk about being upfront…
As you can see, the Apple-inspired stylings mean you get an iPhone 7 clone with a similar finish, antenna lines and camera housing. Heck, UMIDIGI is even calling their front-mounted fingerprint scanner a “Touch ID” sensor.
You shouldn’t expect much else for the price though. There’s a budget-minded quad-core A53 chip (MTK6737), 5-inch 720p screen, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage (via hybrid SIM) and a small 2000mAh battery. As for the camera experience, there aren’t any surprises here, with an 8MP main camera and a 2MP selfie snapper.
There is one upside in the hardware department though, and that’s the addition of a 3.5mm audio jack, right next to the microUSB port (no Type C jack here).
