Meizu Pro 6 Plus: a Chinese phone with the S7’s brains

Chinese manufacturer Meizu has quietly been making a name for itself over the years thanks to its sensibly priced, capable smartphones. It also stands out as it’s one of the few brands using Samsung Exynos processors.

Now, the company has revealed the Meizu Pro 6 Plus, a new flagship with the same Exynos 8890 chip and 4GB RAM combination as the all-conquering Galaxy S7 range.

Looking further down the spec sheet, we see a 5.7-inch 2560×1440 AMOLED display with 3D Touch, 3400mAh battery, 64GB or 128GB storage and USB Type-C. In the audio department, the phone packs a 3.5mm jack and a premium HiFi DAC chip (ESS ES9018K2M).

Photography enthusiasts might want to keep their eyes open for Pro 6 Plus shots, as the phone packs a 12MP f/2.0 main camera (IMX386, for the curious) with ten LED flash, OIS and 1.25 micron pixels. A 5MP f/2.0 camera is on-tap for your selfies.

Otherwise, the Meizu Pro 6 Plus also packs a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner that doubles as a heart-rate monitor.

In terms of pricing, the 64GB model costs RMB2999 (R6099 as a straight conversion) and the 128GB variant has a price tag of RMB3299 (R6709).

It’s worth noting that the 64GB variant comes with a gimped Exynos 8890 chip, so that means a 2Ghz clock speed for the main cores, 1.5Ghz for the power-sipping cores and a ten core GPU. The high-end model boasts clock speeds of 2.3Ghz and 1.6Ghz respectively, as well as a 12-core GPU.

Meizu doesn’t have an official South African presence, so we aren’t holding our breath for a local release. In saying so, the Orange Store brought the mid-range M2 Note to the country, so there might be the slimmest of chances…
