Here’s BMW’s vision for the future of luxury [Gallery]
If you’re the kind of person who has holiday homes on more than one continent and a house that runs the kind of technology that would make Tony Stark jealous, then BMW would very much like to have your attention.
The German marque has unveiled its vision for the future of luxury. It’s done so with the BMW Vision Future Luxury, a concept car which it says “stands for a forward-looking fusion of exclusivity and innovation” and “a driving experience that is at once emotional and exclusive”.
“Innovative technology and modern luxury have always been an important part of BMW’s brand DNA,†says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “We use visionary concept vehicles like the BMW Vision Future Luxury to show where we may be going with these themes in the future, and to give us new inspiration and motivation.â€
Judging by the images BMW’s released detailing the concept, the future it’s hoping for is one where the only people who drive its cars are always immaculately turned out, have impossibly chiseled features and own the kind of homes that feature on the cover of architectural and design magazines.
In all seriousness though, there is something to be said for the fact that while BMW imagines that technology will play an incredibly important role in the future of motoring, that technology will be increasingly discrete.
The interior in particular is worth paying attention to. BMW reckons its future interiors will be built in layers: An initial base layer of fine carbon fabric, it says is followed by a functional level featuring user interface components, control and display interfaces and lighting functions, which in turn is followed by a further structural, load-bearing layer of aluminium for additional strength. Finally, the top layers comprise wood, then leather, to create a warm and comfortable ambiance.
By paring down the interior to essentials, BMW says it’s able to cut total weight substantially. This treatment apparently also makes for virtually seamless transitions and very elegant, fluid surfaces.
