The name isn’t the only rude thing about the Ferrari FXX K

Ferrari has gone mad. As in releasing track-only versions of its top-end hypercar with dirty names mad. The 1 036 bhp LaFerrari FXX K — yep that really is its name — isn’t even meant to be used in a racing series (that would mean adhering to regulations). Nope, the Italian marque just wanted to see how mental a track monster its engineers could build.

The hybrid drivetrain allowing it to get that kind of power consists of a six litre V12, which provides the majority of the power working in conjunction with a smaller electric engine. Together they give the FXX K a maximum torque in excess of 900 Nm.

Ferrari hasn’t just given the already spectacular LaFerrari a new engine and a paintjob and called it a day though. The petrol engine for instance features new camshafts and a modified valve train with mechanical rather than hydraulic tappets. The intake manifolds have been redesigned and given a special type of polishing treatment. The exhaust system has been modified as its silencers have been eliminated.

The front end of the body meanwhile is dominated by a twin-profile spoiler and a larger splitter, which is 30 mm lower, with a gap in its centre. Out back, the tail section is now higher and the mobile spoiler extends further for a total increase in extension of 60mm when fully deployed.

All of this is aimed at making the car’s drag co-efficient as low as possible, while giving it maximum downforce. The result, Ferrari says, is a 50% improvement in downforce in the low drag configuration and a 30% improvement in the more aggressive downforce configuration, resulting in a figure of 540 kg at 200 km/h.

Oh and if you’re wondering why the “K” in the car’s name appears to have wandered away from the other letters, it’s because it stands for KERS, as in the same regenerative braking system F1 drivers use.

Already present the LeFerrari, the FXX K’s KERS has been overhauled for race duty too. The driver can, for instance, control the function logics from the specific 4-setting Manettino on the centre console: Qualify, for maximum performance within a limited number of laps; Long Run to optimise performance consistency; Manual Boost for instant maximum torque delivery; and Fast Charge, for a fast recharge of the car’s battery.
