Take a gander at Rolls Royce’s ultra classy Phantom Drophead Coupé Waterspeed Edition
This one is definitely for the ultra-rich yachtie types out there. Rolls Royce is set to produce a bespoke version of its Phantom Drophead Coupé that celebrates a speed record. This one wasn’t made on land in the middle of a salt flat though. It was made in the water (the clue’s in the name).
The exact record celebrated by the limited edition range is Sir Malcolm Campbell‘s 1937 world water speed record. The British speed freak broke the record in his Bluebird K3 hydroplane boat, powered by Rolls-Royce’s R-Type engine. Already a land speed record holder, Campbell drove Blue Bird K3 to a new record of 203.31 km/h (126.33 mph) at Lake Maggiore on the Italian, Swiss border.
According to the BMW-owned luxury car maker, the Waterspeed Edition will feature the “finest contemporary materials never used before on a Rolls-Royce”. If, like us, you were hoping that might indicate materials found on the lesser known parts of periodic table, you’re likely to be disappointed. Rolls Royce doesn’t mention much besides “brushed steel” and “hand-crafted wood inlays”.
It’s unclear when the first Waterspeed Edition will make its way off the factory floor or indeed how many will be built. Rolls Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös did however say that he was looking forward to “revealing these remarkable cars over the coming months.â€
