The FIA World Championship has announced Cape Town will be one of the cities to host the Formula E racing series in 2022.

The championship council revealed the 2021/2022 racing calendar on 8 July.

The event will be the first time South Africa has hosted a single-seater FIA event in more than 25 years.

The last event held locally was the 1993 South African Grand Prix in Johannesburg.

Season 8 of the Formula E championship will commence on 28 January. The championship will feature 16 races in 12 countries across four continents.

The first two races will take place in Diriyah in Saudi Arabia. The third race will happen in Mexico City.

After that, the championship moves to Cape Town on 26 February.

Cape Town is one of several cities making its debut on the Season 8 calendar. The other cities include Vancouver in Canada and Seoul in South Korea. Seoul will host the championship’s season finale.

Jaguar South Africa, e-Movement, and the City of Cape Town supported the bid to host the event in the Mother City.

“Cape Town is pleased to be chosen as one of the cities to participate in the Formula E tournament” Cape Town Mayor, Dan Plato, said in a statement from Jaguar South Africa.

“The event will unlock major investment, job creation and tourism potential through identifying Cape Town as the racing destination on the African continent.”
