The Bookmarks Awards strike gold, although few golds awarded
The fourth rendition of South Africa’s digital awards, the largest and most glamorous yet, awarded just eight golds, more than 35 silvers and many bronzes out of 52 categories, judged across a variety of digital media disciplines.
The Bookmarks is an event that recognises innovation in digital media and internet-based work for both agencies and online publishers. It was a lively, energetic, well-organised and noisy affair hosted by 5FM DJ Anele Mdoda and well-known technology columnist Simon Dingle.
Across the various categories the gold winners, all agencies, were Ogilvy Interactive (three golds), Social Code, DigiVox, Synergize Online, Quirk, and Gloo Digital Design/Pixel Project.
Best agency was awarded to the Cape Town-based Quirk and best publishing house went to 24.com, which publishes News24, the largest news site in the country. Jason Xenopoulos, who was instrumental in creating the relatively new Native from three smaller agencies about two years ago, scooped the “Best Individual Contribution to South African Digital Media & Marketing”.
Surprisingly there were no gold awards in the online publisher category, with 24.com and Avusa picking up multiple silvers and bronzes. The mobile site category was dominated Ogilvy Interactive, DSTV Online and Prezence Digital.
In the “Product: Advertising & Search”, four golds awards were handed out to agencies Ogilvy Interactive, Social Code, DigiVox and Synergize Online. No golds were handed out for social media campaigns, although six silvers and a variety of bronze awards were secured by various agencies.
No gold awards were handed out for product and software creations by publishers and agencies, with agency Native picking up an award for its Content Management System (“NativeOS”) and a variety of silver and bronze awards for iPhone and tablet apps largely going to Media24/Naspers-owned companies.
Editorial awards were picked up by Media24, Mail & Guardian, Studio 83, New Media Publishing, Avusa Media LIVE and the Daily Maverick. The Graphic design and technology innovation awards were largely shared between Loerie winner HelloComputer, Trigger/Isobar and Gloo Digital Design.
“The success of this evening’s event and the calibre of the 2011 entries and winners is a clear indication that the digital industry is growing from strength to strength,” says Nikki Cockcroft, Chairperson of the DMMA and Bookmarks Chair.
The Bookmarks, a Digital Media and Marketing Association initiative, is judged by local and international industry figureheads from both the digital publishing and advertising disciplines.
