Here’s how you can donate to Imizamo Yethu’s fire-affected residents

Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay was this weekend ravaged by a fierce blaze which ripped through the settlement, displacing over 15 000 people in the process. But thankfully, you can do your bit to help those in need.

We trawled through the various tweets, posts and status updates across social media to list all the ways that you can help Imizamo Yethu’s victims.

In no particular order, here are some of the options.

RESPOND is a “collaborative network of churches in Cape Town that commit to responding in an integrated fashion to larger scale disaster incidents within the City of Cape Town”.

“All funds will be used to supply relief goods and to ensure that the local partners in the community have the resources they need to provide good logistical and other support during the crisis relief period,” the organisation writes.

Heavy Chef and WWC’s donation drive

Location: Woodstock, Cape Town

Salt River-based organisation Heavy Chef is looking for “assistance from [the] community”.

In addition to human needs, the organisation is also looking for items for DARG — the Domestic Animal Rescue Group.

Donate to DARG Hout Bay

Location: Hout Bay, Cape Town

You can also donate goods and cash to DARG directly here. According to reports, nearly 100 dogs have been rescued from the Imizamo Yethu blaze.

Donate directly to Thula Thula

Thula Thula is an organisation that aims to “help people who wish to give their time or resources find charitable organisations operating in Hout Bay”. It’s effectively a central point for charities and NGOs operating in the suburb. Thula Thula also happens to have a Snapscan code, visible here.

NGO Gift of the Givers is assisting with transportation of goods as well as monetary donations. Details are visible in the above tweet, but those who’d like to drop off items physically can head on over to the Hout Bay International School.

The South African Red Cross Society is also hosting a donation drive, a little closer to those in the southern suburbs.
