Yahoo! unveils new-look logo: classical, purple, exclamation point!
Stop whatever you’re doing. Yahoo! has got a new logo. The 18-year old tech brand has officially refurbished its signature “Y to the A, all the way to the OO with an exclamation point because we’re fun” logo that will be rolled out across its homepage and services today.
After posting a different logo every day for the last thirty days as part of a campaign to garner some buzz around the redesign, Yahoo! has played us all for fools as the official redesign was not one of the 29 previously shown. Yahoo! certainly is a fun company.
In a blog post on Yahoo!’s official tumblr, CMO Kathy Savitt stated that the company wanted a logo “that stayed true to our roots (whimsical, purple, with an exclamation point) yet embraced the evolution of our products.”
The changes mark the first major redesign of the logo since 1995, reports AdAge, which posted an article sharing the backstory of the design. The new logo was created entirely by the in-house brand design group and product designers. One design-choice that remains true to the original look is the larger size of the second “O” to give off the impression of a yodel.
Savitt explained what Yahoo! hoped to achieve with the redesign:
“You’ll notice a chisel to our logo that’s very architectural. What we’re saying is our logo is the foundation upon which our brand and products and user experience will continue to be built.”
The new design certainly has a classical look and feel, indicating that Yahoo! wants to move away from the flippancy of the old design, and invoke more stability into its branding. The company also released a short video showing the makeup of the logo.
