FIFA is the devil, but we worship it anyway coz football [Video]
If you are like me and love football then this week is possibly more exciting for you than any other. The World Cup is here and the internet will soon lose its mind. But first, this viral video from John Oliver will get you in stitches.
Oliver, host of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on HBO, explains why he is excited about the upcoming tournament and South America’s obsession with the beautiful game. Brazil is one of the world’s most football fanatic countries and has produced some of the world’s best players, yet the tournament has been marred with protests and riots in the country as the games get closer.
Why is this? Because FIFA is the devil and everyone in Brazil currently hates the organisation for costing the country millions of tax dollars without paying taxes. The way Oliver sees it, the organisation is so profit-driven that it is willing to allows hundreds of people die from heat stroke in Qatar because someone’s pocket got lined with cash monies.
Oliver goes on the compare FIFA HQ to the war room in Stanley Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove. Despite knowing all this, we as football fanatics will still watch and worship at the altar of FIFA…
Why you ask?
“It’s an organised religion and FIFA is its church,” Oliver says. “Just think about it. Its leader is infallible. It compels South American countries to spend money they don’t have building opulent cathedrals, and it may ultimately be responsible for the deaths of shocking numbers of people in the Middle East. But to millions of people like me, it is the guardian of the only thing that gives their lives any meaning.”
