Man United’s Jose Mourinho gains 200k Instagram followers on debut
If you’re not much of a football fan, you might want to sit this post out.
One of England’s biggest clubs Manchester United today announced its latest manager in the form of Portuguese Jose Mourinho. The former Chelsea and Real Madrid chief signed a three-year deal with the Red Devils, but most importantly, he also joined Instagram.
Mourinho’s first post is a bit of a laugh, especially since the caption is so starkly simple: “Manchester United Football Club, Old Trafford, The Theatre Of Dreams.” It depicts the front page of his contract with his full name and the Man United crest clearly visible below.
Even though the post was so simple, his new account acquired over 100 000 followers in just over an hour, and that figure has risen to 201 000 at the time of writing.
His first post also gained 106 000 likes, while the new Manchester United manager himself only follows six other accounts (we’d love to hear your thoughts on who they might be).
Mourinho might be Man United’s new pop star, but his popularity wanes on Instagram compared to the most followed Selena Gomez (now standing at 80.9m), and her challengers to that throne, Taylor Swift, Arianda Grande and Beyonce. He also has come catching up to do as football’s most followed, as Read Madrid player Cristiano Ronaldo currently boasts 59.3-million adoring fans.
