New emoji are heading to Apple’s iOS 12.1
The iOS 12.1 update is still in its beta phase, but soon it will be available for all compatible Apple devices, bringing with it Emoji 11.0 and over 70 brand new emoji.
“Emoji are used by people all over the world to communicate. iOS 12.1 brings even more characters to the keyboard that better represent global users,” said Apple on its website.
While new characters will include the red, grey, curly and bald people that were originally promised, there are also some culturally diverse additions coming too such as “moon cake, red gift envelope and nazar amulet”.
Even sports is getting more coverage with the additions of a skateboard, frisbee and lacrosse (a sport where you catch a ball with a net).
Unicode Emoji 11.0 has been available for smartphones already via Android 9.0 Pie since August 2018.
The wait for iOS users is not over yet however, as Apple hasn’t revealed when the update will be available to all.
“Apple is working with the Unicode Consortium to add more disability-themed emoji to the keyboard for Unicode 12.0, slated for release in 2019,” the company concluded.
