Uber-cheap UberGo launches in East London today
Uber has arrived in East London, but it may not be the Uber service you’ve grown to know.
While UberX is known as the cheapest option in other cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg, UberGo will be offered in East London.
It’s Uber’s lowest price tier that was made available in India back in 2014, and is open to “four door hatch backs in good condition”.
“Cars model year 2012 or newer qualify to drive with uberGO,” the company added on its FAQ.
Pricing details are much cheaper than UberX too. Minimum fare stands at R20, while base fare stands at R4.25. You’ll be charged R6 per kilometre and 60c per minute.
For UberX in Cape Town, you’ll be charged R7.50 per kilometre in Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth. This grows to R8 per kilometre in Pretoria and Johannesburg.
The move into East London is in response to demand but also its rival Bolt’s presence in the small metro.
