Here’s what Twitter thought of the Apple iPhone event
Catch all of our iPhone 7 launch coverage as well as additional Apple news on Gearburn here and here.
From James Corden and Tim Cook opening the show with a terrible rendition of Carpool Karaoke, to the slew of usual Apple bingo shots consumed around the world, there was a lot to talk about at the Apple iPhone 7 launch event in San Francisco.
And of course, Twitter both laid into and praised the tech giant’s products and performance on the night.
How often do you think you’ll lose your Apple AirPods? Twitter thinks daily
#AppleEvent and “iPhone 7” began trending worldwide around 6pm SAST, and it remained a global hashtag for much of the evening following the event.
So, what were some of the key talking points?
James Corden, Pharrell and Tim Cook’s awful singing
So this happened even before the word “iPhone” was uttered. Did Twitter love this totally out-of-character move by Tim Cook?
One-hyphenated world: GIF-fuel.

Ha! That’s quite a start to the #AppleEvent launch! CEO Tim Cook arrives with James Corden, does some car pool Karaeoke & Pharrell Williams
— Aki Anastasiou (@AkiAnastasiou) September 7, 2016
Hell, some even suggested that James Corden MC the show on behalf of Tim Cook. Not a totally terrible idea, we think.
From what I understand @tim_cook is an incredible mgr, He is underwhelming in making a presentation, #Apple should have let @JKCorden do it.
— Kate’s Dad (@KASDad) September 7, 2016
As for the haters, there’ll always be haters…
@MJBuzzi @wwwendyyy You are all Neanderthals who don’t appreciate the greatness that is James Corden.

Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto and a gaming love story come true
What an enormous announcement.
Apple and Nintendo seem like a partnership made in heaven, and that came true when the companies announced Super Mario Run. The game, which will be an endless runner on iOS devices, will be an Apple exclusive (update: nope, it’s coming to Android eventually too), and could be the beginning of more between these two tech giants.
Apple was pretty bold to kick off an event like this, but Twitter absolutely loved the new announcement.

Super Mario Run is definitely a nice surprise. I’m enjoying this.
— David Di Franco (@DavidDiFranco) September 7, 2016
I think we’re going to measure the App Store in ‘pre Mario’ and ‘post Mario’ eras.

Pokemon Go on Apple Watch
Something that didn’t quite go down as well as Apple or Nintendo would’ve wanted was Pokemon Go. John Hanke, Niantic’s CEO, took to the stage to talk more about the game, and it’s new presence on the Apple Watch. Pretty incredible for the wearable, especially since Pokemon Go has been downloaded over 500-million times.
Twitter had mixed feelings about this one. Some suggested that the app is clearly a dead horse…
It’s not July anymore mate #PokemonGo
— martin doherty (@doksan) September 7, 2016
Oh bugger off Pokemon Go. Too little too late. Also you’re still not in SA.
— Graham van der Made (@GrahamZA) September 7, 2016
I bet Pokemon Go on the Apple Watch would’ve been super exciting about 2 months ago haha
— Marques Brownlee (@MKBHD) September 7, 2016
What is Pokemon Go?
— Jay (@JPEX) September 7, 2016
That Pokemon go presentation was so cringe I just deleted my Pokemon Go app #AppleEvent
— King Wolfie (@wolfieraps) September 7, 2016
Also, some noticed the Nintendo spine running through the presentation…
Pokemon Go coming to Apple Watch. If you randomly stumbled into this event, you might reasonably think it was being held by Nintendo.
— Harry McCracken (@harrymccracken) September 7, 2016
Others were understandably excited…
OH MY GOD #PokemonGO is coming to the #AppleWatch… I NEED DIS!!! #AppleEvent
— Chantelle A (@Chani_ZA) September 7, 2016
y’all are haters I still play pokemon go
— dirty heaux (@EvaGiselle) September 7, 2016
As for the new Apple Watch Series 2, there were some noticeable cheers.
I said I wouldn’t need Apple Watch 2…. but now! #AppleEvent got me wanting to spend the money… with Hiking App https://t.co/Sb1jY98Tt8

The new iPhone, its camera and sensual product video
Well, this was the most eagerly-anticipated announcement on the night, and it definitely caused the biggest wave on Twitter. It’s called the iPhone 7 (alongside its spiffier iPhone 7 Plus sibling), and yes, it boasts a “gorgeous new design” as Tim Cook elaborated. But did Twitter agree?
Well, feelings were definitely mixed. From comments on the new iPhone 7’s sleek look, the new Lightning-headphone jack, the wireless Apple AirPods, to the phone’s new camera, you be the judge.
iPhone 7, now 5000% more slippery.

This video describing the iPhone 7 is so beautiful.
— ImABadKid (@BadKidOscar) September 7, 2016
iPhone 7 camera enclosure sticks out like a sore thumb. Seems an invitation for scratches. And carrying on and on about the case seems odd.
— Ace Hoffman (@AceHoffman) September 7, 2016
Only thing exciting about the iPhone 7 is the fact that i get to use my payment plan to upgrade to the new phone w/out paying full price

Tim Cook get coy, Sia debuts her new track
In a move that didn’t smell of U2 and OneRepublic but rounded off the evening nicely, Australian recording artist Sia performed her new single “The Greatest” live at the Bill Graham.
Cue the obvious puns.
SIA. Finally someone cool.
— Farhad Manjoo (@fmanjoo) September 7, 2016
I didn’t Sia this coming. #AppleEvent
— Daniel (@danieldepe) September 7, 2016

And that’s all Tim Cook and company wrote.
